EOC (tanjong) maximize uptime with

CONDITION BASED MAINTENANCE

Predictive information on machinery health is essential for the operations and maintenance strategy at the Suez Gulf and Port Said thermal power plants in Egypt, operated by the Egyptian Operating Company (EOC) and owned by Kuasa Nusa Jaya Limited (KNL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tanjong Energy Holdings.

“Online condition monitoring systems were installed as a supplementary tool to enable condition based maintenance,” says Maintenance Manager Wong Kah Seng, EOC. “The data derived from the systems, coupled with our analyses and other tools, has proved useful for efficiently planning of maintenance activities at our two power plants.”

Shutdowns prevented by automatic fault prediction
For each of the two identical 682.5 MW base load thermal power plants, a Rovsing Dynamics system performs online condition monitoring of two steam turbines, 12 fans and 14 pumps. If any of the monitored machines shows sign of abnormal behaviour, the system will issue an early warning message with automatic fault diagnosis as well as prediction of lead time to inspection.

EOC says that “OPENpredictor™ enhanced the optimum operation of the cooling water pumps providing early detection of a bearing failure that was not possible to detect with the installed instrumentation. In 2004, the system monitored the vibration level on these pumps to avoid serious damage and proved vital for the safe operations. The system is still in place and has improved the reliability of the cooling water pumps.”

Valuable remote diagnostic support
Rovsing Dynamics supports EOC with remote diagnostics and recommendations based on regular reviews of data and predictions from the monitoring system.

According to Mr. Wong, the after sales service and support given by Rovsing Dynamics has also been timely and valuable. “The few occasions where we required assistance have been rewarded by prompt service and professional advice, enabling us to prevent shutting down of our units.”

In 2006 EOC and Powertek took over the two plants from EDF, who originally built them. During the commissioning of the plants in 2003, online monitoring provided EDF with valuable diagnostic data.
